David S. Garbe, PhD

After graduating from Muhlenberg College in 1998, Dr. Garbe embarked on his scientific journey in the laboratory of Dr. Meera Sundaram and performed cancer research using C. elegans as a model system. He then attended graduate school at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) and used Drosophila melanogaster to study nervous system development. Upon obtaining his Ph.D. in Cell and Molecular Biology (CAMB) in 2007, Dr. Garbe performed research focused on discovering novel therapeutics for mood disorders at Pfizer and then investigated the underlying mechanisms of circadian biology and sleep at UPenn. During this time, Dr. Garbe was also an adjunct professor at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia as well as Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges.

Since joining the Pennsylvania Society for Biomedical Research (PSBR) as their Outreach Educator, Dr. Garbe has developed numerous in-class programs and activities, presented to countless classrooms, and engaged over 7,000 students. Dr. Garbe also participates in Teacher Professional Development Programs, Science Fairs, Career Workshops, and Public Community Outreach initiatives. He was recently promoted to Director of Outreach and Education and looks forward to extending the scope, reach, and mission of the organization to educate the public about the importance of biomedical research and its significance to human and animal health.

Steve Beal

A passionate educational leader with 20+ years of teaching experience. Steve is determined to help students close their own opportunity gaps by exposing them to more than just traditional school. Steve believes the future of education is more than rubrics and checking boxes. Students need to be exposed to and make connections with people in their fields of interest.  Steve is also the Science Department Chair for the Centennial School District. This role allows him to have a hands-on approach to science learning, K-12, while also negotiating and expanding partnerships for Centennial.  Steve brings other interests and experiences to the team.  He graduated from Moravian College with a Bio degree, produced an acclaimed film as an independent filmmaker, and works in the investment real estate field.

Ignacio Jayo

Ignacio Jayo

Ignacio Jayo is a high school science teacher who is passionate about innovating education by leveraging the power of partnerships. He received a Physical Therapy degree from Duke University in 1997 and practiced as a physical therapist in various hospitals in Philadelphia. In 2003 he received a Master of Secondary Education degree from the University of Pennsylvania. After graduation from Penn, he joined William Tennent High School where he leads a team that is working to develop partnerships as a way to increase student opportunities and engagement. He is especially interested in developing long-lasting partnerships that empower students, as well as teachers, to grow while working to create novel solutions to real-world problems alongside various industry professionals.
